Sono Wood Fired - Chicago, IL

Yeena, Caroline and I made plans to have dinner at the newly opened Sono Wood-Fired near North and Clybourn.  It was touted as a new pizza date spot in Lincoln Park.  It sounded like an equally suitable place to share a meal with old friends.  Taking a cue from its name, you will soon realize that their specialty is wood and coal fired pizzas, which they bake in a special oven that they imported from Italy.

It's warm and cozy inside, but it's a bit loud if the place is packed.  I'm not sure it's really a great date spot, considering we had to shout to hear each other because there was a boisterous group next to us, but we managed just fine.  We started with the polenta crostini with wood fired mushrooms.  There were three perfectly charred polenta triangles that were dressed with sweet, woodsy mushrooms and shaved Parmesan.

For our pizza, we got the prosciutto, arugula, provolone and mozzarella pizza.  This was my favorite pizza of the two.  The saltiness of the prosciutto was perfect with the peppery arugula and mild flavors of the two cheeses.  The crust was crispy, yet chewy and had a nice smoky flavor from the wood fired oven.

For our second pizza, we chose a red pizza with spinach, goat cheese, ricotta, tomato and garlic.  You can tell this one got more of a char from the oven.  The toppings, however, were a bit lacking ... and dare I say, a bit bland.  We probably should have known from the ingredient list, so it was just a case of probably ordering the wrong thing.

All in all, Sono is very affordable and the pizzas, if you choose correctly, are very good.  They have a variety of salads, a few pasta options and tons of appetizers, including several types of bruschetta, to choose from.  Right next door is Urban Burger Bar, owned by the same guy.  Supposedly they have half-pound chicken, turkey, pork, tuna and beef burgers, a selection of fries (potato, sweet potato, zucchini and more) and milkshakes (chocolate, banana-Nutella and cheesecake, among others), along with 60 craft brews.  Sounds like my kind of place, I will have to stop by next time.
